Wolff Gallery is pleased to present She Was/Is, a new series by Stephanie Hatch. In her mixed-media collages, cosmic mysteries collide with popular culture as Hatch grapples with existential questions of beauty, identity, and transformation, particularly in relation to the way society speaks of and seeks to possess women’s lives and bodies. Poetic elements of text are woven into her work, revealing themes of nature, emotional struggles, and eroticism that redefine the unrealistic expectations presented in women’s beauty and fashion magazines. Stephanie Hatch is a mixed media artist currently working in Portland, Oregon. She has been exhibiting her work in Oregon and Northern California for 15 years. In 2006 Stephanie received her BA in Art from Southern Oregon University where she focused on painting, drawing, and black-and-white photography. Stephanie's work addresses ideas of identity, beauty, and transformation with a love for nature and women. She tackles her subject matter through collage, drawing, painting, multiple exposure photography, and embroidery on paper, blending the sacred and profane to explore the unconscious connections between personal histories, stereotypes, myths, and societal expectations. While her works can be beautifully-colored, dream-like, and often possess intricate patterns and detail, they also challenge our preconceived notions of how things “should be,” and create new realities for consideration.
